ATLANTA (April 30, 2015) – The NFL draft (April 30 – May 2), a marquee event in the annual sports calendar, is now becoming a marketing occasion as well. As the nation’s top student-athletes go pro and can be featured in licensed product, collegiate licensees can quickly turn out product from new professional stars.
OYO Sports, a partner of the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), the licensing affiliate of IMG, which creates licensed collectible mini-figures of players, is leading the charge to launch select rookie and college product. For the first time, fans will see licensed product from the likes of Jameis Winston, Sammie Coates, Amari Cooper, Todd Gurley, and other college stars. The player rights are managed through OYO's license with NFL Players Incorporated (NFLPI), the licensing and marketing division of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA).
The CLC schools (and players) currently featured in this new product are: Alabama/Amari Cooper, Auburn/Sammie Coates, Clemson/Vic Beasley, Georgia/Todd Gurley, Florida/ Dante Fowler Jr., FSU/Jameis Winston, Nebraska/Randy Gregory, South Carolina/ A.J. Cann, and West Virginia/ Kevin White.
In the college market, OYO is currently licensed with 48 CLC institutions and bowls and is a top-five toy licensee for the industry’s leading collegiate licensing company.
“OYO has moved quickly to seize the marketing opportunity inherent in the NFL draft by creating fun, collectible products for college stars going pro,” said Dave Kirkpatrick, vice president non-apparel marketing at CLC. “The company is blazing trails with player-specific products for sale at the NFL Draft.”
OYO Sports is planning special marketing activities leading up to and around the draft, including using social media to promote this new product. For example, CLC will create brief videos for OYO to re-enact the players walking across the draft stage using stop-motion video and audio from Thursday’s draft. The videos will be shared with schools for their social media sites.
At the draft, OYO Sports is working with the NFL to put pro team OYOs in the players’ hands as they walk off the stage in Chicago. The company will also have a presence at Draft Town in Chicago; an OYO booth will be set up with games, prizes, and product for kids to interact with the brand and win prizes. In addition, OYO plans to have pro product ready for the top–15 picks at the main store at the Draft.
“OYO Sports recognizes the fan appeal of the NFL draft. We capitalize on the hot trends in the toy and sport industries, making our newest release of Campus Legend minifigures not only highly sought after but also fun and entertaining for our fans,” said Shari Fabiani, Senior Vice President of Product and Marketing, OYO Sportstoys, Inc.
“We are excited to see OYO Sports seize the opportunity to introduce its lineup of new collegiate products featuring this highly anticipated class of NFL players as they begin their professional careers,” said Steve Scebelo, Vice President of Licensing and Business Development, NFL Players Inc.
Among all sports, college licensing is No. 2 in annual retail sales ($4.6 billion), trailing only Major League Baseball.
