CLC and University Officials Crack Down on Counterfeiters at SEC Football Championship Game

Friday, December 06, 2013

ATLANTA, Ga., (December 6, 2013) – As Auburn University and the University of Missouri players and coaches prepare for Saturday’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) Football Championship game, University officials, in conjunction with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), are taking necessary measures to address potential counterfeit and unlicensed merchandise in the Atlanta area.

CLC, the licensing affiliate of IMG College, and the exclusive licensing agent for Auburn University, the University of Missouri, and the SEC, will work closely with local law enforcement officials to patrol the marketplace in search of counterfeiters selling “knock-off” merchandise. All counterfeit merchandise is subject to seizure.

“There has been a tremendous amount of excitement leading up to this year’s SEC Football Championship because of Auburn’s back-to-back miracle finishes in the last two games and Missouri’s rapid ascent to the top of the SEC ranks,” said CLC SVP and Managing Director Cory Moss. “We want to help ensure that passionate SEC fans can connect to their school brands through quality licensed merchandise that will be a lasting memento of the championship and not unlicensed merchandise of an inferior quality."

With the retail market for conference co-branded licensed product estimated at over $23 million, counterfeiters will look to capitalize on the excitement of fans in town to cheer on their teams.

“We want all SEC fans to have the best experience possible at the Football Championship and all our events, which is why we work with CLC to help protect our guests and consumers against unlicensed products,” said Charlie Hussey, Associate Commissioner, SEC.

Tips for purchasing Auburn, Missouri, or SEC Football Championship Game merchandise:

All officially licensed merchandise should display the, “Officially Licensed Collegiate Product” hologram somewhere on the product or hangtag.

The merchandise should depict the Auburn, Missouri, or SEC logos and trademarks in a tasteful manner, as Auburn, Missouri, and the SEC do not approve distasteful designs.

The tag on the garment should be intact. A torn or missing tag is evidence of a second-hand garment, one that probably would not meet the stringent quality standards in place by Auburn, Missouri, and the SEC.

All merchandise should bear the name of the manufacturer somewhere on the product, either in the form of a hangtag, a neck label, or screen-printed directly on the garment.

All merchandise should have the appropriate trademark designations (i.e. TM, ®)  next to a specific name or design.

Royalties generated from the sale of officially licensed collegiate products go back to the respective institutions to support student scholarships and enhance various initiatives on campus.

Auburn currently ranks No. 18 and Missouri No. 20 in CLC’s annual member institution rankings. The rankings represent royalties reported July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013 on all collegiate merchandise sold.
